Our History
Two Rivers was founded in Phnom Penh in 2019. Today the team comprises five core members and draws on a network of collaborators and resources that the team members have developed over years of working in Cambodia. Pooling their diverse creative, technical and business skills, the Two Rivers team is excited to offer clients a range of production and marketing services, all under one roof. Two Rivers is also proud to produce work that continues to raise the bar on what’s possible for film production in Cambodia.

Jimmy and Kai began working together at 2011 at InDevelopment Productions in Phnom Penn. At IDP they collaborated on feature films and projects sponsored by USAID, BBC World Trust and other major NGOs working in Cambodia. They also helped IDP produce Cambodia’s first ever reality TV Show, “You’re the Man.”

In 2014, Jimmy directed his feature debut, Hanuman, action film that showcased Cambodia’s bokotor talent. Jimmy would go onto make seven more features, many of them building off the action skills Jimmy honed in Hanuman. His action film Jailbreak, would be the first Cambodian film to receive distribution on Netflix. Jailbreak also introduced filmgoers to Phang, who would go on to act in several more features, including Angelina Jolie’s First They Killed My Father, also distributed on Netflix.

Meanwhile, Kai returned to the US to work as a segment producer on several series with Andrew Zimmern for the Travel Channel, including the Zimmern List, for which Kai won an Emmy. Kai also continuing working in location departments on major US film releases, including the Coen Brothers’ A Serious Man.

Jimmy and Kai would reunite in Cambodia to make the Prey, a film that they co-wrote with Jailbreak co-writer Michael Hodgson. Jimmy would direct the Prey, with Kai assistant-directing, as they would do again on KTV, with another script that they co-wrote.

Starting with the Prey, Si Mao joined the Two Rivers team and her canny financing and producing skills helped make both projects a reality. Si Mao would also offer crucial business and producing. and support on Patron Saint, which Jimmy also directed. Si Mao’s extensive network of business connections in Cambodia and China has also proven a valuable asset in setting up Two Rivers commercial production.

Starting with his starring role in KTV, Phang would also become a regular Two Rivers collaborator. His comic sense as an actor was a crucial part of a KTV marketing campaign that included Phang transforming himself into a real-life rapper through music videos, online shorts, and live appearances.

Michel joined the Two Rivers team in 2023 and his background in new media helped spearhead the company’s push into the digital space with Ghost Investigators, which Phang would host. Since its inception in April 2023, Michel has managed the Two Rivers social presence, drone photography, gear acquisition, and countless other tasks, not to mention helping Ghost Investigators garner over 60,000 followers on Facebook, and hundreds of thousands of views across Facebook, YouTube and TikTok.
